WASHINGTON — Racing to stall an expected surge of coronavirus cases, the White House on On Kim day -today :released a series of sweeping guidelines that for the next 15 days will temporarily rewrite the norms of American society.
President Donald Trump, employing a newly somber tone about the crisis enveloping the globe, urged all older Americans to stay home and everyone to avoid crowds and eating out at restaurants. The president for the first time acknowledged that the pandemic may send the economy into a recession and suggested that the nation may be dealing with the virus until “July or August.”
The guidelines were released to an uneasy country. The stock market had its worst day since 1987, America’s largest school system shut its doors and questions remained about the administration’s ability to test for the virus and provide hospital space for those who fall ill.
Among the new recommendations: Over the next half month, Americans should not gather in groups of more than 10 people, schooling should be at home and discretionary travel and social visits should be avoided. If anyone in a household tests positive for the virus, everyone who lives there should stay home. The administration did not say how old people should be to follow the advice to stay home.
“We will rally together as one nation and we will defeat the virus,” Trump said. “We can turn the corner and turn it quickly.”
The president, when asked when the pandemic would subside, said that “if we do a really good job” the crisis could pass by the height of summer. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the administration’s infectious disease expert, did not challenge that claim.
Trump’s prediction was far less optimistic than his earlier ones, when he insisted it could be over in weeks. He also acknowledged that the virus may send the nation’s economy into a recession, a potentially brutal blow for an incumbent in an election year.
That admission was startling for Trump, who for two weeks had struck a discordantly optimistic tone about the pandemic that endangered his presidency. On Monday that upbeat demeanor was gone as he acknowledged the virus was “not under control” in the United States or globally.
He said he did not yet plan to call for domestic travel restrictions while his administration made pointed appeals to millennials to stop socializing and spreading the virus. He was reluctant to advise states to cancel the primary elections ahead. And without providing details, he said “we’re going to back the airlines 100%,” a note of reassurance for an industry crippled by travel bans and fears of spreading the virus.
The expansive guidelines were issued on a day of fast-moving developments in a capital resplendent in cherry blossoms but awash in anxiety.
Congress convened to try to finish an aid package and consider another one behind it. The Supreme Court postponed oral arguments for the first time in over a century. And the U.S. surgeon general said that the United States is about where Italy was two weeks ago in the coronavirus struggle, a sign that infections are expected to rise.
“When you look at the projections, there’s every chance that we could be Italy,” Surgeon General Dr. Jerome Adams told Fox News. Yet he said the U.S. has opportunities to mitigate the pandemic.
Two weeks ago, Italy had 1,700 cases of coronavirus and had reported 34 deaths. Now, Italy is reporting an estimated 25,000 cases and more than 1,800 deaths. About 3,800 cases have been reported in the United States and so far, more than 65 people have died from coronavirus. Although the numbers may not be directly comparable, the trajectory is, as Adams sees it.
The administration also alleged that a foreign disinformation campaign was underway aimed at spreading fear among Americans already spooked by the pandemic.
On Sunday, federal officials began confronting what they said was a deliberate effort by a foreign entity to make Americans think the government was going to impose a nationwide quarantine. Agencies took coordinated action Sunday evening to assure Americans that the government was not planning to do that.
And on Monday, national security officials said there had been a cyber attack involving the computer networks of Health and Human Services, but the networks were operating normally. They didn’t detail the nature or scope of the problem or identify the foreign entity.
This is the updated news for the day crazy how things keep changing daily- I took inventory of our food supply and we should be ok for two week. But I will need to restock by then. This is a wake up call I need to do better in our food storage as a couple and store extra -to help our kids when needed. Shannon said they ran out of toilet paper. The shelves have been empty for buying TP- she said Ryan Ordered three package online and it cost him $35 which is crazy and he even had a hard time finding that online. The consumers are raiding the grocery stores for supplies in a pancic- I’ve keep busy in the kitchen today and Craig has been tinkering out side all day. He raked leaves and burned a large pile of brush. The weather is slowly warming up here at the lake. It has been a lovely day. The lake has been a mirror all day with the mountains reflecting in the water. Pray for the wisdom we need in this challenging time. We watched the best movie Sunday night about William Beam who was called to Palmyra to care for the old Joseph Smith Farm where many early church historical events took place. He was newly married and called to serve there for five years. Mormons had not been back as a presence for about 80 years. He was called to mend relations in the community and to purchase the land where the golden plates were found now known as the hill Cumorah. The people in the coummunity were not friendly and tried to run them off. It would have been scary to endure the unkindnes. Sister Beam was an example of great love. They had been there 6 years and still no friends finally over time they were able to friendship others by their loving kindness and caring for others. They raised their family of 5 and ended up serving there for 28 years the longest mission in church history. When they left they were greatly loved by all and had established 3 branches in the area. It was such a heart warmer movie. It was so fun to go visit there in the fall 2018 and see the sights and feel the great spirit of the lord there. The church purchased many historical sights in the area due to this great missionary who gave his life for the service of the Lord. It is now a great gathering place for thousands every year to gather at the Hill Cumorah pagenat as they tell the story of Joseph Smith and the restoration. Sister beam worked hard and struggled from the unkindnes of the coummunity. She selflessly gave to others by cooking food and caring for the ill. Many missionaries would stop by for a meal she would cook for them while visiting just so they could see the garden grove where Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ appeared to Jospeh Smith in 1820. Sister Beam had an experience where the Savior appears to her to renew her love and service was not unnoticed. From that experience she was able to carry the burdens lay on her and continue her mission in caring for the Joseph Smith farm and sharing the story of the restoration with others. I loved watching the movie. Last night we watched another heart warming movie about Coleville a small town not far from where we live. The miracle of the children saved in an elementary school when a bomb went off- they were held hostage for over two hours- the man was planning to kill all 94 of the children and their teachers. The miracle is the children we’re praying and many in the coummunity praying for their children when the bomb went off. No one child was killed. They each told of stories seeing an angel helping and protecting them. It was a great movie of the power of prayer in our lives and that we do have guardian angles looking after us who are our ancestors. In looking at old family photos the children identify one of their ancestors who was their angel! It was a good movie to watch with the uncertain feelings I’m having from this deadly virus going around. Gives me more encouragement to know we are watched over in our challenging times.
